Replacing a boiler with a heat pump

In short

  • Home transitioned off gas (3,100 m³ per year)
  • 8 kW Daikin Altherma for ground floor underfloor heating, convector, and 230L hot water tank
  • Bedrooms equipped with air conditioning

The client’s request

In 2023, the client approached us with the question of whether it was possible to move away from gas. This large corner house had a high gas consumption of 3,100 m³ per year. After the initial conversation, the goal was not only to eliminate gas usage, but also to improve comfort on the upper floors, where only radiators were installed.

How we supported the client:

Following the initial consultation, we carried out a full assessment of the property. Several key points became immediately clear:

  • There was no floor insulation, causing significant heat loss through the underfloor heating into the crawl space
  • The top floor lacked cavity wall insulation. These are always the first steps we take: reducing energy consumption before implementing new systems.

There was also a clear need to cool the four bedrooms on the first floor and in the attic. A key advantage of air conditioning is that it can also deliver energy-efficient heating.

The existing boiler was 14 years old and had recently undergone its second repair. After exploring several options together, we agreed on the following solution:

2023:

  • Floor and facade insulation installed to reduce energy consumption
  • 4 DAIKIN air conditioning units installed in the bedrooms, connected to 2 DAIKIN multi-split outdoor units

2024:

  • Existing boiler removed and decommissioned
  • Sealing off the flue gas exhaust
  • DAIKIN heat pump installed in the utility room
  • DAIKIN heat pump connected to the entire ground floor and bathroom
  • DAIKIN indoor unit equipped with a 230L hot water tank, sufficient for two consecutive showers
  • Gas connection disconnected by the client
